Why Scarlett Never Really Loved Ashley, Anyway.
Why Scarlett Never Really Loved Ashley, Anyway.
by Robert Diamante
I drown,
I surface, I breathe.
I drown again;
a vexing cycle.
Once I chose a simple stroke.
I swam.
I swam but did not sink into
weak despair.
I fought to stay equal in measure
to my beloved on the bank,
who once held out his hand.
How I reeled to beat back the current,
to make my way to him until
the insistent tide
compelled me.
And I surrendered.
The curtains came down.
Goodbye man on the banks.
Goodbye watcher, stander still.
Farewell drowning man,
whose feet have never touched water.
